DO YOU NEED A DAY OFF? A Candid Conversation on Moving Beyond and Preventing Burnout
The first week of May is Mental Health Week. With more than a year of pandemic-prescribed lockdowns and overwhelming uncertainty, feeling “burned out" has become commonplace.
“When we equate work we love with “not really working,” it propagates a belief that if we love it so much, we should do more of it—all of the time, actually. But this mentally leads to burnout, and the impact on our mental health can be profound.” -Jennifer Moss, Harvard Business Review, July /19 “When Passion Leads to Burnout”
Moderated by Starr Cunningham, President & CEO of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, this panel discussion will feature business, mental health, and wellness leaders to talk about how we can identify, address and move beyond burnout. From setting boundaries to prioritizing self-care—we’ll press reset with the health of our teams and organizations in mind.
We invite you to join us for this panel discussion including a live Q&A where you'll have the chance to ask your questions directly to the experts.
Register today! This event is free to attend and open to members and future members.

PANELISTS:
In 2018, Martina went on medical leave from work, related to experiencing significant symptoms related to burnout, which ultimately ended her 10-year career as a Personal Development Counsellor and Facilitator. Through her struggles with burnout, depression, and anxiety, Martina decided to turn her pain into purpose — re-committing to living her life on purpose. Martina uses her experiences to encourage others by facilitating essential discussions around mental health and wellness — this was the birthplace of Life Out Loud.
Martina holds a Human Services Diploma in Addictions Counselling at NSCC and a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Psychology Concentration (Hons) at Mount Saint Vincent University. She spent over ten years working as a Personal Development Counsellor and Facilitator, in the non-profit sector. In addition to her education, Martina is a certified Mental Health First Aid Canada Instructor.
She has presented at national conferences as a person with lived experience and strives to show our greater community to reduce stigma and to show that there is no health without mental health.
A certified peer-supporter, she is a recipient of the Mental Health Foundation’s Inspiring Lives award as well as a nominee for Canada 150’s Change Makers.
She was recognized by the Nova Scotia Legislature for her work in mental health. She currently serves on the Conference Board of Canada, Healthy Workplace Council Advisory Board.
In her spare time, she is an active volunteer with the Halifax Police’s Victim Services Unit as well as serving as a leader for the Halifax Police Youth Program.
She is a born and raised Bluenoser with a bit of an accent, a strong advocate for supporting women in the workforce, and is an obsessive learner who spends her time reading, researching and hosting her podcast, The Superwoman Code. She is obsessed with periods and the role they play in our lives.
Clinically, she helps women bounce back from burnout, balance their hormones and a design a life where their health works for them, not against them. To top it off, she’s been named one of Atlantic Canada’s Top 50 under 40 year old's and is one of the youngest members of the Women’s Presidents’ Organization. You can find her work published in New York Magazine, O. School, Bustle and Cosmopolitan Magazine.
