Alexandra McCann
Executive Director of ONSIDE
Alexandra “Alex” McCann is the Executive Director of ONSIDE, the Organization for Nova Scotia Innovation Driven Entrepreneurship, a community accelerator empowering rural and underrepresented groups through inclusive innovation-driven entrepreneurship (i+IDE) and collective impact. ONSIDE amplifies disruptive ideas and mobilizes collaboration to turn ideas into impact for a more prosperous and entrepreneurial future in Nova Scotia. Alex is also host of the ONSIDE Podcast now in its second season.
Previous to this role, Alexandra was the CEO for Dockside Investco, a Nova Scotia-based portfolio management company; as well as the CEO for Baie Run Pet Products, a natural products start-up, focused on pet wellness including, omega3s and supplements sold in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, Alexandra has been an Investment Attraction lead for Invest Nova Scotia, covering clean tech, ocean tech, life sciences, as well as bioresources, agri-foods and seafoods. She has also held positions with the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. (Ex-Im Bank) in Asset Management, as well as the Office of Renewable Energy & Environmental Exports, focused on global infrastructure, structured and project finance.
Kate Pepler (she/her)
Owner, The Tare Shop
Kate Pepler graduated from Dalhousie University with a BA in Sustainability, Environmental Science and a minor in Marine Biology. For a year after completing her degree, she was feeling overwhelmed with the doom and gloom narrative of our Earth’s health. This helped her “Eureka!” moment of creating The Tare Shop – which combines all of her passions – oceans, reducing plastic pollution, environmental education, and fostering community – into one community-based business.
Dr. Greg Wanger
Founder & CEO, Oberland Agriscience Inc.
With a Ph.D. in Geology and Environmental Microbiology, Dr. Wanger is an experienced research scientist whose career milestones include five years at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, culminating in their optical organics mapper, SHERLOC, landing on Mars in February 2021 with the Perseverance rover. Dr. Wanger and his family relocated to Halifax in 2016 where he founded Oberland Agriscience Inc. shortly after out of his desire to address the escalating global protein shortage.
Combining a life-long passion for science and innovation with environmental activism, Dr. Wanger and his team are optimizing the Black Soldier Fly to produce a premium, nutrient-rich, reliable protein for inclusion in aquafeed, pet food, and livestock feed.By upcycling Nova Scotia’s pre-consumer organic waste – such as spent brewery grains and food production wastes – Oberland Agriscience is on track to produce a dependable protein source on an industrial scale using less land, less water, and producing lower carbon emissions than conventional protein sources, thereby enabling a resilient, food-secure future.
Mo AlGermozi
CEO, Graphite Innovation & Technologies
Mo AlGermozi is the Chief Executive Officer of Graphite Innovation & Technologies. GIT is a leading Canadian materials engineering firm focused on developing green and sustainable solutions for the global shipping industry. Mo has successfully championed innovative operational concepts and solutions.
In addition to being the co-founder and CEO of Graphite Innovation & Technologies, Mo has co-invented four different inventions in the coatings field, with patents filed worldwide. These innovations are mainly focused on reducing the fuel consumption of large ships and eliminating toxic materials used in marine coatings. Mo also sits on various boards such as the board of advisors for Dalhousie University, Emera Idea Hub, and other startup boards to support young entrepreneurs.
