Eleanor Beaton
Eleanor Beaton is an award-winning journalist, speaker, and executive coach, working with women in leadership positions achieve unprecedented results with clarity, confidence, focus and grace. She is the podcast host of Power + Presence + Position with over 500 episodes.
Eleanor has served as Chair of the Visiting Women’s Executive Exchange Program at the Yale School of Management. In 2017, she won the prestigious Profiles in Diversity “Women Worth Watching” Award for her work promoting diversity and inclusion. She joins previous recipients of this award including General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, advocate/actress Geena Davis and many other women from diverse industries and backgrounds driving meaningful change in parity and gender equality.
Through her world-renowned leadership training, elite-level mentorship, international keynotes, and live events, Eleanor helps ambitious professional women and business owners develop the confidence, presence, political savvy and influence they need to smash the glass ceiling and take their seats at the tables where the big deals and big decisions are made.
Eleanor has been privileged to serve some of the country’s most recognized women leaders, including Arlene Dickinson, star of CBC’s hit show Dragon’s Den and former Canadian First Lady Margaret Trudeau. In 2017 she was a finalist for one of Canada’s most prestigious literary awards, the National Business Book Award, for her collaboration with former Home Depot Canada CEO Annette Verschuren on Bet On Me: A Guide to Succeeding in Business and in Life. Eleanor was also a 2017 finalist for a National Magazine Award for her column on women’s leadership, The XX Factor.
Matt Symes
CEO, Founding Partner, Symplicity Designs
Back again this year by popular demand, Matt Symes is joining us to talk about how you can actually execute your strategies.
As a founding partner of the organization, along with his father, Merv Symes, and brother, Mark, Matt has been a leader at Symplicity for 10 years. Matt has helped over 400 organizations recover from some of their darkest moments. He brings a reality check to leadership teams and forces them to look at their brutal truths. He specializes in developing sound strategies to navigate through uncertain times.
Matt has a unique ability to bring clarity to chaos, which has earned him the honour of being named Business Leader of the Year (2020) from the Halifax Chamber of Commerce and one of Atlantic Canada’s Top 50 CEOs (2022) with Atlantic Business Magazine. He sits on the board at Groupe Savoie and is a strategic advisor for a $80M IT firm. A recovering academic, Matt graduated from the University of New Brunswick (BA, B.Ed), and Wilfrid Laurier University (M.A and PhD - ABD on Leave).
Russell Hopson

Russ Hopson has been with the BDC since 2005. He currently manages the Nova Scotia Entrepreneurship Center for BDC working with a team of business development professionals, interested in only one thing – the success of our Nova Scotia entrepreneurs! Growing up in his family’s small business, he has seen first hand the challenges and opportunities presented to small business owners.
Russ holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Western University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from McGill University.
