Meet The Speakers
Dr. Jeff Dahn
NSERC/Tesla Canada Industrial Research Chair
Jeff Dahn obtained his B.Sc. in Physics from Dalhousie University (1978) and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 1982. Dahn then worked at NRC (82-85) and at Moli Energy Limited (85-90) before joining the Physics Department at Simon Fraser University in 1990. He returned to Dalhousie University in 1996. At Moli, he did pioneering work on lithium-ion batteries.
In 2016, Dr. Dahn began a research partnership with Tesla as the NSERC/Tesla Canada industrial research chair which will run at least till 2026. Jeff Dahn is the author or co-author of over 780 refereed journal papers and 78 inventions with patents issued or filed.
Dahn’s research in the lithium-ion battery field has been recognized by numerous awards including a Governor General’s Innovation Award (2016) and the Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal in Science and Engineering (2017), Canada’s top science prize. He was awarded the Olin Palladium Medal by the Electrochemical Society (its highest honor) in 2023. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2020.

Dr. Chris Burns
CEO, NOVONIX Ltd.
CEO, NOVONIX Ltd.
Dr Burns serves as the CEO of NOVONIX Ltd, overseeing NOVONIX Battery Technology Solutions, in Halifax, NS, and NOVONIX Anode Material business, in Chattanooga, TN, which is scaling production of synthetic graphite products for use in Li-ion batteries.
Dr Burns is a member of the Board of Directors of AccelerateZEV, Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Supply Chain Alliance and formerly worked as a Sr. Research Engineer at Tesla.

Dr. Alice Aiken
Vice President Research and Innovation, Dalhousie University
Dr. Alice B. Aiken, CD, PhD, MSc, BScPT, BSc, ICD.D is a full Professor in the Faculty of Health. Her research focuses on health systems transformation and evidence-informed policy-making with a focus on military and Veteran health.
She was formerly the Dean of the Faculty of Health at Dalhousie. She is a co-founder and the former Scientific Director of the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research, a unique consortium of over 48 Canadian and 13 international universities dedicated to researching the health needs of military personnel, Veterans and their families based at Queen’s University.
She received her PhD and Master from Queen’s University, Canada, her Physical Therapy degree from Dalhousie University, and a BSc in Kinesiology from the University of Ottawa. She completed the Directors Education Program through the Rotman School at University of Toronto, and the ICD. She also proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 14 years, first as a ship’s navigator in the Royal Canadian Navy, then as a physiotherapist.
In recognition of her research leadership in military health, she is currently the Honorary Captain (Navy) for Canadian Forces Health Services Atlantic and a Dame of the Order of St George. She was elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. She has also received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Queen’s University, the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Bronze Medallion (USA).

Matt Borys
Vice-President of Corporate Development, EverWind
Mr. Borys joined EverWind as Vice-President, Corporate Development in March 2023.
Prior to joining EverWind, Mr. Borys was Head of Capital Markets & Treasury for Atlas Corp, where he led capital structure strategic planning as well as sourcing, structuring, and execution of capital raises. Prior to that, Mr. Borys held various senior leadership roles within Atlas focused on modernizing and building out functions driving and supporting capital allocation including Capital Markets, M&A, Treasury, and Investor Relations. During his tenure at Atlas, Mr. Borys raised over $15B of capital including several first-of-its-kind sustainability-linked and green loans and bonds in the US, Nordic, and global markets, ABLs, innovative ECA financings in China, Korea, and Japan; executed over $9B in maritime asset transactions; formed the Atlas public NYSE company structure through an inverse merger; and acquired and integrated APR Energy as Atlas’ energy platform.
Prior to joining Atlas, Mr. Borys held roles in Investment Banking and Project Finance with Desjardins Capital Markets, and in Equity Research with Raymond James, focused on diversified infrastructure and industrials, including power and infrastructure project finance.
Mr. Borys received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University, graduating with Distinction.
Eniko Zsoldos
Graduate Student, Li-ion Batteries
Eniko received her undergrad in Nanotechnology Engineering from the University of Waterloo, during which she completed co-op terms at Sila Nanotechnologies working on silicon-based anodes for batteries. Eniko also had the opportunity to experience larger-scale manufacturing of lithium-ion cells, by working on dry electrode processing at Tesla in Fremont, CA. Currently, Eniko’s research in the Dahn lab is focused on high-nickel, cobalt-free cathode materials, specifically measuring and improving the diffusion of lithium ions in these materials.
Outside of the lab, Eniko loves going rock climbing with her lab mates and playing ultimate frisbee. Fun fact: Eniko has driven 6 different EVs, including a race car that she and her teammates built for Formula SAE Electric in Waterloo.

Sarah Martell, PhD

Sarah Martell, PhD (she/her): Sarah completed a BSc in chemistry from Mount Allison University and her PhD in chemistry at Dalhousie University. Currently, she is a Mitacs postdoctoral researcher at Dalhousie University and cofounder of MetalloSil Inc. Her research involves making a special material called porous silicon nanoparticles and testing the materials reactivity in water to produce green hydrogen for clean energy applications!
Throughout her time at Dalhousie University, she has been involved in extracurriculars that build and teach about diversity, equity, and inclusion in chemistry as well as ways to make chemistry more sustainable. In 2024, she was selected as the Top 100 CAS Future Leaders by the American Chemical Society.
