Meet Your Speakers
Senior Vice President, Philanthropy and Partnerships Make-A-Wish Foundation
Lynda joined Make-A-Wish Canada in August 2022 as Senior Vice President, Philanthropy and Partnerships. She is an accomplished executive with more than 25 years of experience building high-performing, mission-driven teams across the private and non-profit sectors.Over the past 15 years, Lynda has held leadership roles with several respected charitable organizations in Canada and internationally. Most recently, she served as Director of Major Gifts at the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and previously led corporate partnerships at Plan International Canada.
Before transitioning to the non-profit sector, Lynda spent two decades in the Canadian media industry, including senior leadership roles at Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting and CanWest Global Communications. During that time, she worked with some of the country’s most recognized media brands, including Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada, History Television, Showcase Television, BBC Canada, National Geographic Canada, and Global Television.
In 2019, Lynda received the L’Oréal Women of Worth Award in recognition of her longstanding leadership in the charitable sector. She studied Marketing and Communications at the University of Ottawa and remains active in her community, including serving on the Board of Sheena’s Place in Toronto.
President, Ocean Group of Companies
John Flemming is President of the Ocean Group of Companies, a second-generation, family-owned group based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The group includes Ocean Contractors Limited, Thompson’s Moving Group, Conrad Brothers Ltd., Conrad’s Transport, and Briar Transport.
A civil engineer by training, John previously spent six years in British Columbia as a Project Superintendent and Project Manager on major civil construction projects before joining the family business. He holds a Civil Engineering degree from Dalhousie University and completed the Executive Program at Queen’s University. He is a registered Professional Engineer with Engineers Nova Scotia and a member of TEC Canada.
John has held numerous leadership roles in the construction sector, including Past Chairman of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia, Past President of the Nova Scotia Road Builders Association, and Past Board Member of the Canadian Construction Association.
He is also deeply involved in community and charitable initiatives. John currently serves as Chair of the Nova Scotia Chapter of Make-A-Wish Canada and previously served as a Trustee of the IWK Foundation and Chair of the IWK’s “Great Big Dig” Gala. He has also been involved with the Urban Development Institute of Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Construction Curling Association, and the Hubbards Sailing Club.
John and his wife Karen are co-owners of the Tuna Blue Restaurant, Inn, and Marina in Hubbards, Nova Scotia. An avid supporter of sailing and sport, he co-chaired the 2022 World 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 Sailing Championships and the 2024 Sail Grand Prix in Halifax Harbour.
