The have two adult sons and four grandchildren.\n\n\n\n\n\nKaren has been involved with the education system through her life.  A graduate of the Nova Scotia Teachers' College\, she has also earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University and a Masters in Education from Saint Mary's University.\n\n\n\nKaren has a wide range of experience in the school system.  She was a school teacher in the town of Truro\, an administrator at North River Elementary School\, a Regional Supervisor with the Colchester East Hants District School Board\, and Assistant Superintendent with the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board and an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Education\, Acadia University and the University of Prince Edward Island.\n\n\n\nKaren served as Chair of the Regional Health Authority 2003-2006\n\n\n\nElected in June 2006 as the MLA for Colchester North\, Karen has been responsible for several portfolios in government\, including Minister of Education\, Minster of Health\, Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act and Minster responsible for the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act.  She has been a member of the Treasury & Policy Board since 2013 and is the current Chair.\n\n\n\nKaren was re-elected in 2009\, 2013\, and 2017.  Her broad political experience coupled with her dedication to improving the lives of Nova Scotians\, make her an excellence choice as the current Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance and Treasury Board.
