SUMMARY:DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS SERIES: The Courage Report- The Future Belongs to the Bold. Canada Needs More Courage.
DESCRIPTION:Host Sponsor:\n\n\n\n The future belongs to the bold. Canada needs more courage.\n\n\np.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px\; font: 11.0px Calibri}\nspan.s1 {font-kerning: none}\n\n\n\nAs the country approaches its 150th anniversary\, Canada finds itself at a challenging tipping point. Nearly a decade after the Great Recession\, our economy is stagnant and our position as a global leader is poised to diminish. After several years of studying Canada's economy\, Deloitte believes that at the root of these challenges\, and the key to overcoming them\, is courage. Today\, only one in 10 Canadian companies can be considered truly courageous. Fortunately\, for many more\, courage is within reach.\n\n \n\nThe reality is that courage makes a difference. Courageous companies grow faster\, create jobs and pursue growth more deliberately. We need more companies willing to take risks\, be bold and do what's right. The good news? If Canada's business leaders take action now and commit to cultivating courage in their organizations\, our country's potential is limitless. If Canada's business leaders take action now and commit to cultivating courage in their organizations\, our country's - and our province's -- potential is limitless. \n\n \n\n \n\nPresentation of Courage Report followed by Panel Discussion \n\nAbout our Speakers: \n\n\nPresenting the Courage Report\n\nDuncan Sinclair\, Vice- Chair Canada\, Deloitte\n\n\n\nDuncan is a Vice Chair whose portfolio of responsibilities include our relationships with major global institutional investors\, leading our relationship with the Canadian Olympic Committee\, overseeing the development and governance of our thought leadership program\, and in leading Deloitte University North as its inaugural Dean. Duncan has been with Deloitte for 28 years and has worked with privately owned businesses and their family owners as well as public sector and publicly listed clients. His professional experience includes assurance services\, operational improvement reviews\, mergers and acquisitions\, succession planning\, strategy development\, corporate and family governance assessments and corporate restructuring across six continents.\n\n \n\nDuncan has also served for four years on the Board of Deloitte Canada where he chaired the succession planning committee and served on the governance and quality and risk committees. Duncan also served on four nominating committees for Deloitte in Canada and globally focused on selecting Chairs of the Board and CEOs\, including chairing the Canadian CEO nominating committee in 2012. He has also served on the nominating committee for senior appointments at the University of Alberta in Edmonton\, Canada\n\n \nPanelists\n\n\nJennifer Gillivan\, President & CEO\, IWK Health Centre Foundation.\n\nBefore joining the IWK Foundation\, Jennifer worked for fifteen years at the CBC at the regional and national level.\n\nJennifer was appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada to serve as a member of The Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments in Nova Scotia. Jennifer is a board member for Greater Halifax Partnership\, Vice Chair for Children?s Miracle Network North American Advisory Board\, Member of The Advisory Board Sobey School of Business and a member of the Canadian Children?s Hospital Foundations Executives.\n\n \n\n The Halifax Chamber awarded Jennifer with The Business Person of the Year\, 2017. Jennifer was awarded by Atlantic Business Magazine Top 50 CEO Award for both 2014 & 2015. Distinctive Women National Conference awarded Jennifer with Professional of The Year 2016-17. Jennifer was recognized nationally by RBC Women of Influence Entrepreneur Award. Jennifer was awarded by BMO Community & Charitable Giving Award and has received two CBC English Television Awards\, The Halifax Ambassador Award and a Progress Halifax Women of Excellence Award. \n\nJennifer has completed the Institute Of Corporate Directors program and is working towards her ICD designation in early 2017.\n\n\n\n \n\n\nMathew Harris\, Atlantic Managing Partner\, Deloitte\n\nCPA\, CA\, CIRP\, FCA\n\nMathew is the Atlantic Managing Partner leading five offices with 300 professionals. He is a Senior Vice President of our firm's Corporate Restructuring Practice\, and has provided clients with restructuring advice for more than twenty-five years. Mathew has led several high profile mandates involving the Province of Nova Scotia\, NewPage Port Hawkesbury Corporation\, and Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nLisa Drader-Murphy\, Designer & President\n\nCanadian designer Lisa Drader-Murphy is the president and owner of the Lisa Drader-Murphy fashion house\, published writer\, and sought-after professional public speaker. A Progress Club Women of Excellence award-winner in the category of innovator/entrepreneur\, Drader-Murphy was named Atlantic Business Magazine?s Top 50 CEO Awards in 2016. \n\nHer first independent label\, Turbine\, was established in Calgary in January of 1997 and a second store opened shortly after at The Eau Claire Market on Prince's Island Park. In 1998\, with a 3rd store slated for Banff\, an opportunity presented itself to designer/owner Lisa Drader-Murphy to move her young family to beautiful Nova Scotia and the temptation to enjoy a slower pace and family-friendly lifestyle was too great to resist.\n\nHer corporation is a vertical operation and is unique in that it is one of few remaining in Canada that houses the design\, cutting\, production\, and retail of her collections - all from her privately run production and retail facilities. In spite of the severe downturn in the retail industry\, locally and across Canada over the past few years\, Lisa Drader-Murphy has continued to experience growth\, recently opening store #5 in Toronto and appearing on The Shopping Channel\, subsequently being offered her own show.
